Molly Melching is the founder and executive director of Tostan (meaning "breakthrough" in the Wolof language), a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) headquartered in Dakar, Senegal whose mission it is to empower African communities to bring about sustainable development and positive social transformation based on respect of human rights.

Molly Melching Founder and Creative Director, Tostan In her first years in Senegal, Molly was struck by the way that development agencies often excluded villagers from the development process and how blindness to Senegalese values and perspectives led to projects that were unsustainable and often failed. In the fall of 1974, Molly Melching, all of 24 years old, landed in Dakar, Senegal. It was her first trip to the continent, a six-month stint to be spent studying African literature.
